In a recent news, the 19 individuals who have been convicted in May 9 cases in military courts have been released on humanitarian grounds, the (Inter-Services Public Relations) ISPR stated. Furthermore, the ISPR stated that a total of 67 individuals have submitted their appeals out of which 48 of them have been processed and directed to the Courts of Appeal. Moreover, 19 petitions have been accepted and the prisoners from the military courts have been released.
According to the military’s media wing, “Sequel to the promulgation of punishments to 9th May Tragedy convicts, they have exercised their right to appeal and have asked for mercy / remission in their punishments. They all shall be released after completion of procedural formalities.” The ISPR stated, “The remission of punishments is a testament to the strength of the due process and fairness, which ensures that justice is served while also taking into account the principles of compassion and mercy.”
The statement from the ISPR further said, “Sequel to the announcement of the May 9 punishments in light of the Supreme Court’s decision, the Field General Court Martial has promulgated the punishments to the following remaining 60 culprits after examining all evidences, ensuring the provision of all legal rights to the convicts, completion of due process and the appropriate legal proceedings.”
On the other hand, PTI Chairman, Barrister Gohar, expressed the party’s stance on the current scenario by stating, “Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s position has not changed. “No civilian should be tried in military court. It remains unconstitutional and the matter will be decided by the Supreme Court. There should not be a conviction stigma by the military courts. This should be a civilian court.”
