After weeks of deadly protests in Bangladesh and the departure of ex-premier, Muhammad Younus, the Nobel laureate, took charge of the office as the Interim Prime Minister of Bangladesh. He was appointed prime minister on the demands of the students’ group and will now lead the interim government until next elections. He will also look forward to the responsibility of organizing next general elections of Bangladesh. Meanwhile, his immediate task is to restore peace and order in Bangladesh and bring life back to normal.
It is pertinent to mention here that Muhammad Younus’s oath has been taken by the President, Muhammad Shahabuddin, in the presence of civil society members, diplomats and other influential personalities. It should be noted that Younus has been appointed as the chief advisor of the interim government and the position is equivalent to that of the Prime Minister. However, during his oath taking ceremony, it has been observed that no party member or representative of ex-premier, Sheikh Hasina, was present.
Moreover, Muhammad Younus has immediately appointed the cabinet members of his interim government. All the 16 interim cabinet members were appointed from the civil society which also include two prominent leaders of the students’ group. It is worthy of mentioning that Younus, the interim Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has appointed his cabinet members by discussing with military and the civil society representatives.
During the oath taking ceremony, Younus stated, “I will uphold, support and protect the constitution. The country has the possibility of becoming a very beautiful nation. Today is a glorious day for us. Bangladesh has created a new victory day. Bangladesh has got a second independence.” He further said, “Law and order is our first task … We cannot take a step forward unless we fix the law-and-order situation. Every person is our brother … our task is to protect them,” he said, adding that “the whole of Bangladesh is one big family.”
Younus also appreciated the spirit of youth and stated that, “They protected the nation and gave it a new life.” Moreover, Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, also expressed hope in Muhammad Younus and stated that he is sure of the restoration of law-and-order situation in Bangladesh after the appointment of new premier of the interim government.
On X, Modi wrote, “My best wishes to Professor Muhammad Yunus on the assumption of his new responsibilities.”
