In what has become the UK’s worst riots in 13 years, the country is witnessing unprecedented unrest and over 100 arrests. And all this is happening due to a mere wave of misinformation spread online. What exactly happened is that three young girls of the ages of six, seven, and nine have been murdered by a British-born suspect of 17 years of age at the “Taylor Swift theme dance party” in Southport, near Liverpool, last week. Furthermore, 10 other people were also severely injured in this incident. The situation got worse when it was rumored online that the suspect who killed these three young girls with a knife was a Muslim and an immigrant.
According to the sources, the far-right supporters in the UK took advantage of the situation and started protests against the scale of immigration in the UK, with anti-government slogans like “enough is enough”, “stop the boats” and “save our kids”. These protestors on Sunday broke into the Hotel that was used to host asylum seekers. They threw bricks at the police, broke the hotel windows, and put certain bins on fire. Hence, the UK’s worst riots reveal a nation grappling with deep unrest and significant challenges related to immigration and racism.
As per the laws of the UK, suspects under the age of 18 are not named, but the suspect in this very case has been identified by the name “Axel Rudakubana” who was born in Wales. The judge, Andrew Menary, ordered the disclosure of his identity in order to stop the misinformation that the suspect is a Muslim and an immigrant. The move allows the situation to be under control. It should be noted that the suspect has been charged with “three counts of murder and, 10 counts of attempted murder.”
It is pertinent to mention here that the UK’s Assistant Chief Constable of Police, Lindsey Butterfield, stated, “The behaviour we witnessed has been nothing short of disgusting. While it was a smaller number of those in attendance who chose to commit violence and destruction, those who simply stood on and watched remain absolutely complicit in this. We have officers working hard, reviewing the considerable online imagery and footage of those involved, and they should expect us to be at their doors very soon.”
Your point of view caught my eye and was very interesting. Thanks. I have a question for you.
