In a recent news, the Khyber Deputy Commissioner (DC) has imposed section 144 in the province for 30 days ahead of the Pashtun Qaumi Jirga/ PTM Jirga, scheduled for October 11 in the Khyber district. It should be noted that the DC stated in a notification that the ban has been implemented in the province from Oct 9 to Nov 7 and any type of unlawful gathering involving five or more people is banned. He also banned the display of any type of weapons within the KP province jurisdiction.

However, Manzoor Pashteen, the head of PTM (Pashtun Tahaffuz Movement), has written a letter to Barrister Gohar stating that the Jirga of October 11 will be held in accordance with the law and order and no unlawful conduct will happen in the PTM Jirga. He further wrote that discussions related to the peace and security of the district will take place in the gathering on October 11.

On the other hand, the federal government is not giving permission to hold this gathering as it already banned the PTM in an official notification issued earlier. The government stated that the movement has links with the terrorist organizations which will be a direct threat to the security of the country, hence banning this movement.

Moreover, Senator Kamran Murtaza, in the talkshow of Shahzeb Khanzada, stated that if PTM denies that it has not links with any of the terrorist organization, then it is unjust to ban this movement and put blames of terrorism on this.

It should also be noted that PTM is also going to challenge this ban of federal government in the Islamabad High Court (IHC) stating that it is a non-political movement that works for the rights of missing persons in KPK and FATA and does not have any links with the terrorist organizations.

At the same time, MNA Omar Ayub Khan, has strongly condemned the ban on PTM by federal government and stated that tear gassing its people is not a way forward to bring peace in the province as well as in the country. He also condemned federal government for declaring that PTM has links with terrorist organizations.

Dr. Shahbaz Gill, on the other hand, requested the KPK government to let the journalists work independently and if any of them is arrested, then government should immediately issue orders to release them in lieu of covering happenings ahead of PTM Jirga.

However, it is pertinent to mention here that the notification has issued regarding the upcoming PTM Jirga from KP Chief Secretary office, which reads: “General public, including all segments of society are informed, and stand informed, that participation, overt or covert, physically, financially or otherwise in any programme or activity of a proscribed organisation is unlawful and will make them liable to lawful action.”

It further stated, “All administrative and police officers shall take appropriate measures in accordance with law to ensure that directions contained herein are implemented in letter and spirit.” Thus, the KP officials have issued strict orders to prevent this PTM Jirga from happening as notified by the federal government.
