The Ministry of Finance on Thursday has announced an approval of an additional budget of Rs 60 billion to proceed with Operation Azm-e-Istehkam. Of the Rs 60 billion allocated, the government will immediately release Rs 20 billion, which the military will use to equip the security forces combating militants in two provinces. However, the remaining amount of Rs 40 billion will be used to procure the advanced military gadgets and will be released in the second half of the current fiscal year 2024-25.
The decision regarding the launching of a new military operation against the terrorists was taken in the Federal Apex Committee in June 2024 to which the Finance Ministry has now approved the budget for the subject matter. Pakistan has been steadfastly combating terrorism for many years, but in recent times, the situation has grown increasingly dire. The threat of terrorism has escalated, with attacks becoming alarmingly frequent—almost every other day—particularly targeting military personnel stationed along the borders.
These relentless assaults not only endanger the lives of brave soldiers but also threaten the stability and security of the nation as a whole. In response to this mounting challenge, the government has launched Operation Azm-e-Istehkam. This strategic initiative is designed to effectively counter the growing menace of militancy, bolster the capabilities of our security forces, and restore peace and safety to the affected regions.
It is pertinent to mention here that the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has asserted the fact that terrorists are now using sophisticated military weapons, many of which were left behind by the U.S. forces during their withdrawal. This has put Pakistan’s security forces at a significant disadvantage, as they are facing adversaries armed with cutting-edge weaponry. To effectively combat this growing menace and protect the nation, our military forces urgently require similar advanced equipment.
The situation is particularly dire in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan regions, where terrorism has seen a sharp rise. Our military personnel are on the front lines, engaging in intense and dangerous operations to safeguard these areas. Thus, the launch of Operation Azm-e-Istehkam marks a decisive step in the ongoing fight against militancy in Pakistan.
In light of this, the finance ministry has recognized the critical need for immediate action. To support our forces, they have announced the immediate disbursement of Rs 20 billion to address the most pressing security needs. This initial funding is intended to equip the military with the advanced weapons and resources necessary to counter the well-armed terrorist factions. Furthermore, the remaining Rs 40 billion will be allocated as per the military’s ongoing requirements, ensuring that the forces remain well-equipped and prepared for the challenges ahead.
