In a recent development, Lt Gen Muhammad Ali has been appointed as a new defense secretary according to a notification issued by the Establishment division. It should be noted that he will be acting as the country’s 33rd defense secretary and will commence his duty from Oct 1. As per the notification, his appointment as a defense secretary will span for a period of two years and three months and that makes a time span till Dec 31, 2026.

However, it is pertinent to mention here that Lt Gen Muhammad Ali is currently undergoing the services of a Quarterly Master General (QMG) and has been posted in the Artillery Regiment. Not to mention, Lt Gen Muhammad Ali has also been awarded with the prestigious honor i.e., “Hilal e Imtiaz” for his exemplary services in the field.

It should be noted that before his appointment as a defense secretary, Lt Gen (retd) Hamooduz Zaman Khan was acting at this position. However, after his retirement, the interim additional defense secretary position has been held by Maj Gen Amer Ashfaq Kayani since Aug 24, 2024.
Talking about the department of defense ministry, it acts as a bridge between government and the defense sector in addition to managing all the paperwork and carrying out administrative functions. Furthermore, it eases communication between the civilian and military leaders which then take key strategic decisions for the defense of the country through mutual collaboration.
