Owing to the call of protest given by PTI leadership at Liaquat Bagh, Rawalpindi, the Rawalpindi police has blocked major entry points of the city in order to restrict PTI workers from reaching to the venue. In addition to that, shelling has also been reported by the city police towards the PTI workers to dismantle them and hence, creating barriers on their way from reaching the venue. Apart from that, Section 144 has also been imposed in Rawalpindi and the suburbs to ban all public gatherings.
However, it is pertinent to mention here that paramilitary forces have also been deployed in the city. Whole city presents bulk of containers which are stationed at Faizabad interchange, Double Road and Saddar. On the other hand, Islamabad police has also blocked the entry to the venue by placing containers at the Islamabad motorway at Hakla.
A social media post from Rawalpindi police, stated, “Illegal assembly or rally is not allowed at any place, legal action will be taken in case of violation. Violators of law and order will be dealt with with iron hands.”
Due to the presence of containers all over the city and the entry points, the PTI workers along with the leaders have starting marching towards the venue. However, several arrests have also been seen as it has been reported that PTI Secretary-General, Salman Akram Raja, has been arrested by the police. The arrest has been condemned by PTI leader Sheikh Waqas Akram, who stated, “This facist government is hell-bent upon destroying the peace in this country. Protest is our constitutional right and this regime can’t take it away from us.”
Not only this, the PTI MPA Tanveer Aslam has also been arrested by the police. Despite strong hurdles and shelling by the police, the PTI workers are resilient in the face of adversity and are continuously marching towards the venue of protest. Moreover, the videos circulating over social media has also depicted that the residents of Rawalpindi are distributing water to the PTI workers affected by shelling.
On the other hand, the Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari in a press conference, stated, “The Punjab Police knows how to treat this problem, when he (CM Gandapur) comes here, we will teach him a lesson. The chief minister whose province is plagued by terrorism and other issues is threatening to come to another province and cause trouble. We will not allow you (the PTI) to take shelter under the law or the Constitution or human rights. This person (Gandapur) coming to this province to cause trouble will have to face the law. He doesn’t care about Section 144, he only cares about Section 804.”
