The situation in Balochistan following the ongoing monsoon rains is grim. The relentless monsoon rains in Balochistan have resulted in tragic consequences, leaving many grappling with the aftermath. Disaster Management Officials reported that the heavy rains have caused significant devastation, claiming the lives of 19 people and leaving 11 others seriously injured. In total, around 3,000 people have been affected by the destructive weather according to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
Following the severe weather conditions, the provincial government of Balochistan has imposed an emergency in various union councils of the districts of Balochistan, including Kalat, Ziarat, Awaran, Kachhi, Loralai, Sohbatpur and Lasbela.
It is pertinent to mention here that one of the rivers in Balochistan in Sohbatpur overflowed and it destroyed many rice fields in its path. The provincial government has tagged all these areas as “calamity-hit areas”. Moreover, a video circulating on the internet has also received appreciation from the general public in which a family was trapped in the flood in Killa Abdullah area and a driver came to the rescue and saved the lives of all the people. The driver, in lieu of his humanitarian service, received cash prize from the Balochistan’s chief minister, Mir Sarfaraz Bugti.
The chief minister also appraised him by saying that the person has set an example for all of us by saving the lives of women and children and keeping his life in danger. He also gave the driver a certificate of appreciation along with a cash reward.
However, regarding the devasting situation of monsoon rains in Balochistan, the PDMA official, Yunus Mengal, said; “Balochistan has witnessed two dangerous spells of monsoon since July 1.” He also advised people to take precautionary measures during this season and do not leave the houses unnecessarily.
Along with that, the PPP Senator Sherry Rehman, while acknowledging the loss of human lives incurred from the monsoon rains in Balochistan, stated; “It was a pity that Pakistan is once again in the grip of the effects of climate change. Abnormal monsoon rains have wreaked havoc once again. This monsoon spell is likely to continue till August 25, so all concerned institutions need to be alert to avoid further losses.”
