Following the violent protests that are happening all across Bangladesh and the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the situation is still not showing any signs of stability. The political conditions in Bangladesh are severely deteriorating, and the crowd is not returning to peace. It has been reported that after the resignation of PM Sheikh Hasina, the crowd also vandalized the statue of Sheikh Mujib Ur Rehman, which holds historic importance for Bangladesh. This action of the protestors has shaken Bangladesh’s hope for peace and stability, and the turmoil is escalating rapidly.
Videos of the statue of Sheikh Mujib Ur Rehman being vandalized are circulating on social media, depicting how protestors went to the top of it by climbing, then started damaging it with hammers. Along with this, they were chanting slogans, and in a couple of seconds, the statue of Sheikh Mujib Ur Rehman broke into pieces. Truly, a saddening incident it is.
It is pertinent to note that the protests in Bangladesh started late in July, with the students demanding to remove the quota system for civil service jobs. They also demanded the immediate resignation of PM Sheikh Hasina, who has been serving as Prime Minister of Bangladesh for 15 years. Protests went violent when the Prime Minister was not agreeing to the demands, but when protestors didn’t refrain from going through the PM’s palace in Dhaka and started putting the roads on fire, the PM resigned and fled to India on a military helicopter.
However, the chief of army staff is now negotiating with the major political parties in Bangladesh to form an interim government in order to restore peace and stability in civil society. He also addressed the nation to demonstrate peace and not to further indulge in anything that may cause civil unrest. Despite the warnings, there are no signs of peace as violent incidents like the vandalism of the statue of Sheikh Mujib Ur Rehman are continuously happening.
