Earlier this morning, the Russian coastal region of Kamchatka has been struck by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake. According to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the earthquake occurred at a depth of about 51km (32 miles) from the region. After this earthquake of huge magnitude at Russian coastal region, the alert warning of several aftershocks was also issued which occurred at a recorded magnitude ranging from 3.9 to 5.0.
However, right after the earthquake, a tsunami threat was issued by the U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center. It should be noted that the event occurred at around 8:10 pm UK time and at around 7:35 am (2335 GMT) in the capital Taipei, as reported by the US geological Survey (USGS). Residents in the Russian coastal region felt the impact of the 7.2 magnitude earthquake, though no major damage has been reported so far.
It is pertinent to mention here that as per EMSC, the waves having the magnitude of a meter above level could occur in some coastal areas of Russia but they would be limited with mild effects. Hence, the situation is not so severe. The regional emergency authority of Russia reported on Telegram saying, “Most of the aftershocks are imperceptible.” Emergency services were quickly mobilized in the Russian coastal region following the 7.2 magnitude earthquake.
Moreover, the Central Weather Administration of Taiwan first issued a quake warning of 6.3 magnitude, and at the same time, a notification was issued as a mobile alert with the message for the citizens, “Keep calm and seek cover nearby.” As per the regional reports, two people got trapped inside an elevator in Hualein during an earthquake, but they are now safe. Authorities have confirmed that the Russian coastal region is safe, with no damage reported after the 7.2 magnitude earthquake.
The National fire Agency of Russia also assured that there is no major damage reported and the situation is in control. All the major high-speed trains, metro systems and rails are reported to be operating and functioning normally as per their routes and timings. The government also predicted “low likelihood” of casualties from the earthquake, hence the situation is normal.
