In a latest development, the Pakistan Tehreek e Insaaf (PTI) and members of Sunni Ittehad Council have announced the boycott of the participation in the parliamentary committee for the selection of Chief Justice of Pakistan. It should be noted that the speaker of the National Assembly, Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, has made efforts to convince the PTI leaders to attend this meeting. However, Barrister Gohar Ali Khan has refused to comply with any further proceedings regarding the subject matter.

It is pertinent to mention here that the committee has even formed a four-member sub-committee in order to convince PTI leaders to attend the meeting. The sub-committee consists of the members Ahsan Iqbal, Rana Ansar, Raja Pervez Ashraf and Kamran Murtaza to bring the PTI leaders to the same front.
Political committee has decided that PTI will not participate in Special Parliamentary Committee.

Despite the efforts, Barrister Gohar stated, “We have made our decision. We will not be part of this committee’s meetings.” It should be noted that the formation of this parliamentary committee is a result of the constitutional amendment made to Article 175A of the constitution which changes the methodology of appointing Supreme Court judges.

Now, the main authority of appointing the Chief Justice of Pakistan rests with the 12-member parliamentary committee which constitutes of eight members from the National Assembly (NA) and four members from the Senate. They will then appoint the Chief Justice of Pakistan from the top three judges in the panel.
