Earlier today, Russia launched a large-scale aerial assault on Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of at least six people. The attack involved a barrage of missiles and drones aimed at crippling Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, causing widespread power outages in several cities. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, “This was one of the most extensive strikes to date, involving over 100 missiles of various types and around 100 Shahed drones.”
The Ukrainian Air Force reported that it detected all the missiles and drones, which were aimed at nearly every city in Ukraine. Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal condemned the attack, stating, “Russian terrorists have once again targeted our energy infrastructure. At least 15 regions were struck by a mix of drones, cruise missiles, and hypersonic Kinzhal missiles.”
Furthermore, Zelensky said, “Every leader, every one of our partners, knows the decisive actions required to end this war justly. Ukraine cannot be constrained in its long-range capabilities when the terrorists face no such limitations.” He further stated, “The most attention is on Novohrodivka and Vodiane, where the assaults are most intense. I am grateful to all our units for their resilience.”
It’s important to note that Ukraine’s national energy company, Ukrenergy, has implemented emergency power cuts to stabilize the grid, which has been severely impacted by Russia’s aerial assault i.e., drone and missile strikes. Ukrainian authorities have reported significant casualties in the regions of Dnipropetrovsk, Zaporizhzhia, Volyn, and Zhytomyr.
Despite being supported by Western allies; Ukraine still not has full permit to launch an aerial assault in Russia through the missiles and drones it has been given by European countries. Ukraine has reportedly asked the Western countries to allow them to attack Russia in response to today’s attack on Ukraine but Western countries have not allowed Ukraine to use its military equipment against Russia for the moment.
Moreover, Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry has also made request for a counter aerial assault on Russia by stating, “First, affirming Ukraine’s long-range strikes on all legitimate military targets on Russian territory. Second, agreeing to use partners’ air defense capabilities to shoot down missiles and drones close to their airspace.”
