In a recent development regarding Gaza ceasefire talks, US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, has arrived Egypt and met Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu. According to Blinken, Netanyahu has agreed to the US “bridging proposal” which aims to bridge the gap between Israel and Gaza regarding ceasefire agreement. However, Hamas insists that any ceasefire must lead to a permanent end to hostilities between Israel and Gaza. It should be noted that since October last year, Israel has killed more than 40,000 people in the ongoing Israel-Gaza conflict. Despite various attempts to establish a ceasefire, none have been successful.
Therefore, the US Secretary of State has now met with the Egyptian President as well to discuss the possibilities of a permanent ceasefire between Israel and Gaza. While addressing the reporters, Blinken stated, “Just last week, the [US] president put forward a proposal with Qatar and with Egypt to try to bridge the gaps that remain between the parties so that we can get agreement to what the president put out there a couple months ago.” Despite ongoing Gaza ceasefire talks, tensions between Israel and Hamas remain high.
He further said, “In a very constructive meeting with Prime Minister Netanyahu today, he confirmed to me that Israel accepts the bridging proposal, that he supports it. It is now incumbent on Hamas to do the same.” Thus, diplomatic efforts have intensified as Gaza ceasefire talks continue behind closed doors.
On the other hand, Hamas has not been fully satisfied with the “bridging proposal” as according to them, it would give Israeli forces control of the “Netzarim Corridor” that splits Gaza into north and south regions. According to the Hamas spokesperson, “We will only agree to the implementation of Biden’s proposal, which we agreed to a few months ago.
“The Israelis have retreated from issues included in Biden’s proposal. Netanyahu’s talk about agreeing to an updated proposal indicates that the US administration has failed to convince him to accept the previous agreement”, he stated further. Hence, the latest round of Gaza ceasefire talks has shown some promise, but major hurdles still exist.
