As the conflict between Israel and Gaza persists without a permanent ceasefire in sight, the situation has deteriorated to the point where outbreaks of various diseases are emerging, with polio being one of the most concerning. The Palestinian Health Ministry has reported its first Polio case on Friday after a period of 25 years. The fears of this outbreak have started growing in Gaza strip amid the Israeli hostilities on innocent civilians. With newborn babies, women, the elderly, and the injured, there are no medical facilities available to treat them or contain the spread of this disease. Hence, the Palestinian Health Ministry is concerned about the reporting of its first polio case after 25 years.
In Deir Al-Balah, a mother became alarmed when her one-month-old son began developing skin rashes. Desperate for help, she took him to the hospital, only to be told by the doctors that there were no medicines or creams available to treat the baby. This situation highlights the dire state of healthcare facilities amid the ongoing conflict and the reporting of its first polio case, where shortages of essential medical supplies are exacerbating the suffering of vulnerable populations, including infants.
The mother explained the situation as, “He had skin rashes as if he was burnt.” Then, she took him to Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in order to receive better treatment for the skin rashes. It should be noted that the first polio case which was reported by Palestinian Health Ministry was found in a 10-month-old baby due to lack of receiving vaccine. His mother stated, “My son was deprived of the first vaccine in his first month.”
The spokesperson of Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital stated, “If the occupation (Israeli forces) continues to close the (border) crossing and denies access to vaccines, it will lead to a health disaster.” However, it is pertinent to mention here that regarding the situation of the first polio case being reported in Gaza, the World Health Organization (WHO) said, “The reemergence of polio represents yet another threat to the children in the Gaza Strip and neighboring countries.”
