In a latest development, the G20 Summit 2024 has been kicked off in Brazil with global leaders gathered in order to shed light on the issues pertaining to poverty, climate change and the ways to enhance multilateral trade in the world. It should be noted that the US President, Joe Biden, will also be going to attend this G20 Summit considering it his last summit of the presidential term before Donald Trump will be elected as the next president of USA.
Not to mention, the Chinese President, Xi Jinping, will be the main guest and star of the G20 Summit as a “global statesman and protector of free trade in the face of Trump’s America First agenda.” The G20 Summit will be hosted by the Brazilian’s left-wing President, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, and he will be directing the attendees of the G20 Summit to discuss global issues related to climate change and it’s financing along with tackling poverty.
However, it is pertinent to mention here that the Brazilian’s Supreme Court in Brasilia has been attacked by a suspected far-right extremist who tried to attempt a suicide bomb on the Supreme Court. Fortunately, the attempt has been failed and the attacker killed himself in the process. Due to these recent happenings, the security of the G20 Summit has been extremely strict and stringent.
A good thing or to say, a hope, for the global community to address and tackle their challenges is that both the G20 Summit and COP 29 are happening in the same dates, the later in Baku, Azerbaijan. Now, the world hopes a better and sustainable solution for the aforementioned issues in order to create a healthy environment both locally and internationally.
The Brazil’s President, who is hosting the G20 Summit, stated, “The conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East would be kept off the summit agenda to focus on the poor. Because if not, we will not discuss other things which are more important for people that are not at war, who are poor people and invisible to the world.”
He further said, “What I want to say to the 733 million people who are hungry in the world, children who go to sleep and wake up not being sure if they will have any food to put in their mouths, is: today there isn’t any, but tomorrow there will be.”
