In a latest development, the tensions between India and Canada are escalating rapidly regarding the murder of a Sikh separatist leader, Hardeep Singh Nijjar, in Canada in June 2023. As per the recent reports, the Canadian government has expelled six Indian diplomats from Canadian soil including Indian High Commissioner, Sanjay Kumar Varma.
Regarding the subject matter, Canadian Prime Minister, Trudeau said, “The evidence brought to light by the RCMP [Royal Canadian Mounted Police, Canada’s national police service] cannot be ignored. It leads to one conclusion; it is necessary to disrupt the criminal activities that continue to pose a threat to public safety in Canada. That is why we acted.”
On the other hand, India has denied all these claims and stated that the Canadian stance has been influenced by Sikh Separatist Campaigns and that India has no connection with it. As a result of Canada’s expelling of Indian top diplomats, India has also expelled six Canadian diplomats and gave them a deadline till Saturday to leave the country.

The India Foreign Minister, issued a statement, “We have no faith in the current Canadian government’s commitment to ensure their security. Therefore, the government of India has decided to withdraw the High Commissioner and other targeted diplomats and officials.”
Moreover, the Canadian Foreign Minister said that the relations between India and Canada are becoming “very tense and difficult.” She said that there remains a threat on Canadian soil about the growing dispute of Nijjar’s killing and that killings like this could happen as well, so Canada needs to protect its soil.
