Pakistani Athlete Arshad Nadeem has secured his spot in the Olympic javelin finals. His first throw reached a distance of 86.59 meters. By showing his remarkable skill and determination, Nadeem earned his place in the Olympic javelin finals.
Meanwhile, the defending champion India’s Neeraj Chopra also delivered a remarkable performance by throwing the javelin 89.34 meters away and making his way to the Olympic javelin finals. Athletes were required to achieve the mark of 84.00 meters to qualify for the final round.
The last time Pakistan won a bronze medal in the Olympics was indeed in 1992 in Barcelona. This medal was won by the national field hockey team.
Pakistan has participated in the Summer Olympics since 1948. The country has won a total of 10 medals in its Olympic. Hockey has been Pakistan’s most successful Olympic sport. Out of Pakistan’s 10 Olympic medals, 8 are in field hockey (3 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze). Pakistan’s last Olympic gold medal was won in 1984 in Los Angeles, also in men’s field hockey. Pakistan has won only two individual medals in its Olympic history – both bronze in wrestling, one in 1960 (Rome) and one in 1972 (Munich).
Pakistan sent a total of seven athletes and six of them have already been eliminated from their respective events. The 27-year-old is the last and biggest hope for a medal in the Olympics for Pakistan.
Arshad Nadeem being the only hope for the country has won a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships in 2023 at Budapest where he threw an impressive 87.82 meters, just behind India’s Neeraj Chopra and also clinched the gold medal at the 2022 commonwealth games with an impressive 90.18m throw and became the first south Asian to breach the 90m mark.
Arshad Nadeem will compete in the final event on Thursday August 8 which will take place at the same venue. So, Nadeem is “the only hope for the country,” it’s not an exaggeration. In a nation where cricket usually steals the spotlight, Nadeem has single-handedly put Pakistan on the map in track and field. His achievements are opening up new possibilities for Pakistani athletes in international competitions.
